The artichoke (cynara scolymus) is a thistle-like plant with big round flowers that can reach a height of 2 meters. Most of us know the artichoke as a delicious vegetable of which only the heart and the fleshy parts of the petals are eaten. It originated in the Mediterranean area, where it has been known for hundreds of years as a natural aid to the digestion of fatty substances and also as a remedy against flatulence and bloatedness. However, it is not the edible parts of the artichoke that are used as a natural remedy, but its leaves and roots. These contain a bitter substance (Cynarin) that has a stimulating effect on the digestion and the metabolism, and improves the functioning of pancreas, gall and liver. Artichoke extract stimulates the production of gastric juices and reduces feelings of nausea, sickness and bloatedness. Tests with concentrated artichoke extract have shown surprisingly good results in the detoxication of the liver as well as in the lowering of cholesterol and lipid levels.
Because of its wide range of effects on digestion, the artichoke protects the body against strain or damage such as often results from wrong eating habits. According to current ideas, the artichoke is an excellent natural help in relieving excess strain on the digestive process. It is recommended that artichoke extract is taken as a food supplement over a prolonged period or even on a permanent basis.
