Lactobacillus acidophilus is a friendly bacteria that consumes sugars and produces lactic acid.  It is added to milk to form yoghurt and other fermented dairy products. It is extremely valuable for the health of the intestine.  When it is consumed in adequate numbers is populates the intestinal tract and can enhance the state of health.  Acidophilus is apparently one of the few dietary bacteria that actually survives the acidic environment of the stomach. It thrives in the intestines and fends off other pathogens that convert bile and dietary substance to carcinogens. A regular dietary intake is required to maintain a viable intestinal population.

The effect of Lactobacilli:

Immune System:  It has been documented that lactobacilli may enhance macrophage and lymphocytic activity. This means that the cellular mediated immune system becomes more powerful and more effective. Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid in the gastrointestinal tract and this helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria (pathogens).  Lactobacilli product natural non toxic antibiotics that can stop the growth of some pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. When the lactobacilli have successfully colonised the gastrointestinal tract they may prevent the growth of harmful micro-organisms like Candida albicans and Clostridium.

Digestion and Nutrition:   They enhance the digestion and absorption of protein and fat.  They may increase the absorption and retention of minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, and iron.   They make some B-vitamins and possibly vitamin K.   Cholesterol Reduction

Antibiotic Therapy:   Individuals who have undergone antibiotic therapy frequently (which may partly destroy the intestinal flora) report an normalisation of intestinal function when they take Lactobacillus preparations.

Lactose Intolerance:   Lactose intolerance may be lessened by the consumption of lactobacilli. Some people experience intestinal discomfort after eating dairy products. This may be due to a lack of the proper enzymes to digest the milk sugar lactose. The lactose enters the intestine and results in gas, pain, diarrhoea. If there are enough lactobacilli present in the gut, then the lactose can be digested by the bacteria and not produce gas and other uncomfortable effects.

Who needs Acidophilus:   Antibiotics, some cortisone-like drugs, some birth control pills, alcohol, some food additives, caffeine, chlorinated and fluoridated water, and stress, can destroy the natural intestinal flora. Most people have been subject to one or more of these detrimental factors.  It is recommended that people who have had the natural balance of friendly intestinal flora disturbed should regularly take Acidophilus to help restore their digestive system to optimal health.  This can either be done in form of Yoghurt with Lactobacillus acidophilus or in form of capsules with the Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria.
