Cod liver oil contains many active natural ingredients, the most important being vitamin D, vitamin A and unsaturated omega-3-fatty acids. Cod liver oil is an old, proven and potent tonic necessary for the development and maintenance of bone structure; it is especially important for growing children and in cases of osteoporosis.
To counteract osteoporosis as well as the break-down and weakening of bone structure, a higher intake of calcium is recommended. However, the body cannot always take in and store enough calcium in its bone structure. Nowadays it is generally recognised that vitamin D helps with the storage of calcium in the bone; it helps take up calcium from our food and makes it available for building new bone structure.
Vitamin D, and especially vitamin D3, has the important function of keeping a balance between calcium and phosphor in the body. An unbalanced calcium-phosphor relationship often leads to degenerative complaints in the bone structure, such as arthrosis and osteoporosis. When calcium is taken as a dietary supplement, it is recommended that cod liver oil is taken at the same time.
Vitamins A and D found in cod liver oil also strengthen the body's ability to counter infection and support healing of damage to skin and mucuous membranes.
